The Cognac house Maison Ferrand has announced the extent of the damage to its property by the hailstorms that slammed into Bordeaux last month.

“During the hailstorms . . . 50% of the vines in 30 hectares of our vineyards suffered damage,” says Alexandre Gabriel, proprietor of Maison Ferrand and vineyard owner. “Our thoughts and support go out to our neighbors, who were more severely affected. While it is a bit early to estimate, 3,500 hectares of the Cognac region sustained damage to 80% of its vines, and another 10,000 hectares saw 20% destruction of the crop.”

Early estimates of how the inclement weather affected the grape-growing region were that hundreds of vineyards in southwest France were affected.

Thousands of hectares suffered heavy damage. Some producers reportedly lost their entire harvest.
